Cast out from the clockwork island of Ironhold, where mechanical technology controls everything, Orin Crowfall wakes on a small boat in the middle of the ocean, with no idea of how he came to be there.

Plagued by perilous seas and with a terrifying sea monster on his tail, Orin eventually washes up on island of Thray, which he is amazed to discover is a living, breathing organism that can communicate with its people.
